The Level 1 Automation Engineer provides high quality control solutions and support in the realms of machine automation on aluminum cold rolling mills.

As noted above, the Level 1 Automation Engineers primary duties are at the controller level, concerned primarily with all facets of PLC programming and high-speed control systems. However, duties may also include work in the Level 0 and/or the Level 2 areas.

Essential Accountabilities:

  • Provides direction in design, development, implementation, commissioning, and procurement activities associated with computer, automation, and other electronic control equipment.
  • Coordinates with data processing, production, and designs electrical interfacing necessary to implement equipment automation.
  • Develops and maintains process control and automation software necessary for proper automated operation of the machine centers.
  • Works closely with production and process personnel in troubleshooting situations.

Experience with the following will be helpful and should be highlighted:

  • Manages small to medium size capital projects and use of project management skills
  • Administrator for servers and work stations running Windows operating system
  • Repairs, maintains, and modifies various application software that controls and affects systems around the aluminum rolling mill, including:

o X-ray gauges

o Flatness control systems

o HMI (human machine interface) systems

o Lasers

o Siemens PLCs

o Ethernet networks:
Wired, fiber optic, and wireless

o DC and AC motors and drives

o iba PDA Data Flight Recorder

o PROFIBUS networks

  • Use of software/programming languages including:

o Siemens Simatic S7

o iFIX/Intellution HMI (including VBA scripting)

o Thin client and terminal server technology

o Java

o ibaAnalyzer

  • Software development, including VB Script, Siemens SIMATIC Manager S7 Ladder PLC Programming, and CFC (block language) Programming for high-speed controllers
  • Designs, maintains, and modifies machine guarding systems for safety
  • Uses ibaAnalyzer on a daily basis to support the process group in quality efforts and the maintenance group in reliability efforts

Essential Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong process automations aptitude is needed
  • Must be able to develop on, monitor and maintain automation systems in the business unit. Various hardware & software platforms are part of the level 1 automation realm
  • 50% of influence is based on knowledge and expertise while 50% is based on interpersonal skills. Good communication skills (written and verbal) are invaluable.
  • Must think independently and have a curious nature.
  • Problem solving is difficult -- but paramount -- in the area of troubleshooting reliability issues within the automated systems. Team communication is required for systems issues as well as the ability to adapt to change.
  • Procedural control is limited to the agreement of engineers, teams, and Unit Manager. This positions control affects the ability of the equipment to meet production standards and goals.
  • Must have good documentation skills. All software changes must be clearly documented.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of five years experience in advanced electrical or control systems development and maintenance, preferably in the metals industry.
